TRACES OF THE GREAT WAR
During WWI, Val di Sole became a strategic area: Italian and Austro-Hungarian troops fought to have control of the surrounding mountain peaks and glaciers, among the freezing temperatures of the Adamello and Ortles-Cevedale mountain groups. WWI is also known as the “White War” exactly because it was fought among the snow and the ice of our mountains, making war even more dangerous and hard. There are many different types of battle remains in this area like trenches and forts that changed Val di Sole's landscape forever; for example, worth visiting is the cannon of Cresta Croce located at 3,200 m a.s.l. or the last defence lines at the bottom of the valley. Over the years, a considerable and above all commendable amount of work has been carried out to conserve and preserve war forts and trails used during WWI in addition to the creation of museums where many historical artefacts and remains have been placed in order to enrich our historical heritage and to never forget the past. Various events have been organized to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of WWI including both commemorative and historic-cultural events, which will be held between 2015 and 2018.
“WHITE WAR” MUSEUM IN TEMÙ AND IN VERMIGLIO
These two museums were created in order to remember what happened during the WWI. A wide range of relics can be found at the museum: equipment, weapons, documents, photographs, books and videos that will help visitors to experience the daily life of soldiers at the warfront, to feel their strain and pain: it is a part of our history we shall never forget. With your cards, you can get reduced price or free access.
Fort Strino is located along the road going towards Passo Tonale, between the town of Vermiglio and Passo Tonale. It is part of a fortification system in Trentino devised by the Austrian Militia after the Wars of Independence, when the Trentino region became the southern border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The fort has been patiently and meticulously restored in order to become a historical museum on the “White War”: experience a unique jump back in time! Free parking near the entrance and free entrance with the Opportunity Card.
GALLERIA PARADISO (PARADISO TUNNEL)
The Galleria Paradiso is located right at Passo Paradiso (2.573 m a.s.l.) which can be reached by taking the Paradiso gondola lift from the departure station in Passo Tonale. The museum is located in a long tunnel that was dug in the granite rock during WWI, and used by the soldiers as a shelter from the freezing temperatures, snowstorms and enemy artillery. It now hosts a multimedia exhibit called “Suoni e Voci della Guerra Bianca” (Sounds and Voices of the White War), featuring a selection of war relics with information concerning the events that took place here and the conditions of the lives of the soldiers on the glacier. The sound system within the tunnel creates a unique atmosphere with music, sounds and voices of the war, that have been muffled to recreate the same sounds that soldiers heard when they were in the tunnel. Free entrance with the Opportunity Card.
